Big City or Small Town? How Women Choose the Best Solo Travel Experience for Safety, Fun & Fulfillment

Are you a woman who's recently divorced, widowed, or simply ready to rediscover you again? Maybe your children are grown, you're facing a new chapter, and you're wondering, What’s next?

Here’s an answer to the What’s next question that’s been transformative for many women: Solo travel.

You don’t need to wait for someone to join you. You don’t need a reason, a perfect plan, or even permission. You only need a little courage—and some helpful guidance to get started safely and confidently.

At Travel With Joy TV, I coach women just like you on how to start solo traveling successfully. Today, let’s explore a key decision: Should you explore a big city or a small town on your first (or next) solo trip?

Both offer incredible benefits. The key is to match the destination with your comfort level, interests, and desired experience.

🏙️ The Perks of Big Cities for Solo Women Travelers

1. Endless Activities & Entertainment

Big cities like New York, Chicago, or San Francisco (I’ve traveled to all of them so I can speak about all of them.) offer a buffet of experiences—museums, live theater, shopping, botanical gardens, walking tours, and wine-tasting. You can tailor your trip to what you love, without negotiating with anyone else.

Solo Travel Tip: Choose a centrally located hotel near major attractions so you can walk or use public transportation safely.

2. You Blend In

In a big city, no one thinks twice when they see a woman dining alone or exploring solo. There’s comfort in anonymity. You’re just another curious traveler taking in the sights. You may feel more comfortable too with busy streets full of people.

3. Abundant Transportation Options

From rideshares like Uber to buses and subways, big cities make it easy to get around—no rental car needed and no parking hassles.

4. Women-Friendly Communities & Tours

Many big cities now offer solo-friendly experiences, from women-only walking tours to small-group excursions and foodie nights. These are fantastic ways to meet fellow travelers—without the pressure of working with a constant trip companion.

🏡 The Joys of Small Towns for the Solo Explorer

1. Slower Pace, Deeper Peace

Places like Hermann, Missouri or Ivins, UT offer the perfect escape if you’re craving rest, reconnection, and reflection. These towns are often walkable, charming, and less overwhelming than their big-city counterparts.

2. Welcoming Vibes

In small towns, people often say hello. Shopkeepers ask where you're from. You can be vague vs. specific if you prefer.  Locals might even give you their favorite hidden gem for sunset views or the best slice of pie. This friendliness can make you feel instantly more at ease though you always want to practice the safety measures that I will cover in your coaching session.

3. Immersive, Authentic Experiences

From local wineries to artisan markets, staying in a small town gives you the chance to soak in the culture in a personal, meaningful way. You’re not rushing—you're truly experiencing.

4. Ideal for First-Time Solo Travelers

If you're nervous about how to start solo traveling successfully, small towns can be the ideal launchpad. With fewer crowds, less noise, and a simpler pace, you can build your confidence while staying safe and enjoying every moment.  I recommend starting small for most of my clients.

Safety Tip: Choose a well-reviewed inn or B&B and let someone know your itinerary. Walk during daylight hours until you're fully comfortable navigating on your own.

🔐 How to Stay Safe When Traveling Solo

Regardless of where you go—big or small—safety is key. Here are a few quick reminders:

  • Share your travel plans with a trusted friend or family member
  • Use technology wisely: Download Google Maps offline, carry a power bank, and have emergency contacts saved.  You may want to write down key names and numbers in case your phone malfunctions or gets lost.
  • Stay alert: Trust your intuition. If something feels off, it probably is.  The point is to enjoy yourself and not feel nerves.
  • Book smart: Use reputable hotels or Airbnbs with strong safety reviews and verified hosts
  • Pack light & blend in: Avoid flashy jewelry or clothing that screams “tourist”

💬 So, Which is Better: Big City or Small Town?

There’s no “right” answer—only what’s right for you right now.

➡️ Do you want energy, variety, and likely more people around you? Head to a big city.
➡️ Do you crave calm, connection, and cozy charm? Try a small town.

Both can be incredibly rewarding for women looking to rediscover themselves and embrace new adventures. And if you’re still unsure, why not plan a short trip to one of each this year?  I’ve also taken trips that combine both options, meaning I’ve flown into Las Vegas (and spent time there) then taken a shuttle out to St. George, UT on into Ivins, UT to a resort.
