Leveling Up My Solo Travels: Cruising the Lower Mississippi River Solo and Loving It

As an experienced solo traveler, I'm always looking for new and different ways to explore. Flying or driving to a destination is very familiar, so I wanted to take solo travel to the “next level.” That’s when I discovered American Cruise Lines to stay in the United States and I booked a Lower Mississippi River cruise from Memphis to New Orleans—a small ship experience that felt like the perfect way to ease into solo cruising with crowds.

Big cruise ships like Carnival didn't appeal to me for this solo adventure. The idea of thousands of people in one place felt overwhelming. But this cruise? It offered a calm, intimate vibe. Even better—it ended in New Orleans, allowing me to fulfill a longtime personal interest: exploring the footsteps of Lee Harvey Oswald during the summer of 1963. None of my friends or family share my fascination with President Kennedy's assassination, but that’s the beauty of solo travel—you can chase your own interests unapologetically.

I flew into Memphis and stayed at the historic Peabody Hotel, home of the famous duck parade. Watching those ducks waddle down the red carpet rolled out just for them to the fountain made me smile. I explored Beale Street, soaked in the Elvis history (he went to prom at the Peabody!), and treated myself to a formal tea at Chez Philippe—a dream experience for this tea lover.

Before boarding the ship, I spent a night at the Guest House at Graceland and enjoyed delicious BBQ at Marlowe’s Ribs & Restaurant—complete with pink car service to and from my meal!

When I boarded the cruise ship and entered my cabin, the first emotion I felt was excitement. I had this all to myself! No stress, no distractions. Just me, my thoughts, and a peaceful space. At lunch that first day, all the small tables were taken by couples. I found myself at a large table alone—until a mother and her three daughters asked if they could join me. We clicked instantly, and one of those daughters is now one of my closest friends. Had I been traveling with others, I may have never met them!

Our days were filled with excursions—some we did together, others we shared stories about over dinner. From visiting the Coca-Cola Museum in Vicksburg to taking a guided tour of Natchez City Cemetery to hear about famous residents of the area, I fully leaned into experiences that spoke to my interests. Evenings offered piano music, cocktail hours, and live entertainment including a Tina Turner impersonator—what a blast!

Cruising the river gave me both reflection and connection—the rare blend of solitude and community. Every moment reaffirmed that solo travel doesn’t mean lonely. It means open. And empowering.

After disembarking in New Orleans, I took a bus tour of the city before checking into my hotel to prepare for another trip highlight: a private Lee Harvey Oswald walking tour. Just me and the knowledgeable guide, walking through places I had read so much about—seeing Lafayette Square, hanging Mardi Gras beads—and engaging in thoughtful conversation. Not a one-sided presentation, but a real discussion.

I flew home the next day, my heart full and my spirit uplifted. I had taken a new leap, embraced a different mode of solo travel, and made unforgettable memories.
