If you’ve ever dreamed of getting away for some quiet “me time” with wine, charm, and scenic views—all wrapped in a cozy, walkable small town—let me introduce you to Hermann, Missouri as a wonderful option for where to go.

Recently, I packed a bag and excitedly loaded the vehicle for a solo drive giving myself full permission to pause real life and explore a destination that’s perfect for a first (or fiftieth) solo getaway. Whether you’re craving relaxation, connection with yourself, or a little pampering, Hermann delivers all of that in a setting that feels like a storybook—but with better wine.

Why Hermann?

Nestled in Missouri’s wine country (Yes, that’s a thing), Hermann offers just the right mix of quaint and classy. Think German-style buildings giving a nod to their roots and friendly faces around every corner. I never once felt out of place or unsafe as a solo woman traveler. In fact, I felt so empowered and free—moving on my own schedule, making my own plans (or unplans), and choosing every experience just for me.

Let me tell you where to stay, sip, and soak.

Where to Stay Solo in Style

For solo travelers who want luxury with charm, Hermann Hill is a dream. The views of the Missouri River are calming, and my room was thoughtfully designed with hot tubs, fireplaces, and even a spa shower. I treated myself to one of their massages to mark the anniversary of the day I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and walked away feeling like a new woman. Self-care at its finest.

Another favorite? The Inn at Hermannhof. It’s steps from downtown and the Amtrak station, which is perfect if you prefer not to drive. The rooms are elegant yet cozy plus, breakfast is included—and it’s divine.

Both of these spots are solo-woman-friendly I found, with attentive staff and environments that make you feel seen and welcome.  If you’re staying within a tight budget and want to spend money shopping, on spa services, or hello—wine, there are so many options of places to stay to fit your priorities.

Wineries Worth Wandering To

Hermann has seven wineries, all located close enough for a full weekend of strolling and sampling. My personal picks?

  • Stone Hill Winery – According to their web site, “one of the oldest and most acclaimed wineries in the nation.” Their cellar tour is fascinating and the tasting room is lively but never overwhelming.  Plus I enjoyed a delicious dinner at their restaurant, Vintage 1847.
  • Adam Puchta Winery – I did the Elevated Tasting Experience, and since it was the middle of the week, it ended up being a private tasting which I loved!  So much fun to sip, munch on the delicious offerings, and visit before buying my selections.

And here’s a solo travel tip: Check out the Hermann Trolley so you can relax between stops. No need to worry about directions or driving. Just enjoy the ride.

Spa Time & Soul Time

One of my favorite parts of solo travel is the ability to say “yes” to whatever it is that you need in the moment. We’re usually putting everyone else’s wants or interests first—am I right ladies?  In Hermann, I chose to linger in those indoor (& outdoor) jetted hot tubs, and give myself plenty of downtime to reflect on what is (& isn’t) working in life so I could plan changes.

If you’re like many of the women I coach, you realize solo travel gives you space to remember what you love. What you want. In Hermann, I slowed down enough to rediscover my joy.

Safe, Simple, and Soulful

Small towns like Hermann are ideal for solo adventures because everything’s close, locals are helpful, and there’s peace around every bend. I was there mostly during the week which meant less traffic and crowds and more quiet and chill.  I walked to dinner alone at The Tin Mill restaurant without a second thought. I browsed a few of the boutiques (shopping is not my thing), took in river views, and said “yes” to dessert at dinner—all by myself, and all with a huge smile.

If this sounds like something you want—but you’ve been unsure where to begin—this is your sign.

You Deserve Joy

You don’t need anyone’s permission to travel solo. You just need a safe destination (like Hermann, and I have many other trip ideas for you too), a guide who gets you (Hi, I’m Joy, your guide!), and a willingness to say, “I’m ready to live more fully.”

Hermann, Missouri is a hidden gem where you can dip your toe into solo travel—or fully dive in. Either way, you’ll come home a little lighter, brighter, and more you.
