Why Women Need to Solo Travel Now: Don’t Wait Until “Someday”

There’s a pattern I’ve seen sadly over and over again when talking to women about solo travel. I often hear phrases like these:
“Once the kids are grown…”
“After I retire…”
“Maybe someday…”
We tell ourselves we’ll take the trip, pursue that dream, or finally explore what we’ve always wanted to—but not yet. Right now, we’re taking care of others. We’re working on what the company needs from us, parenting pouring into the next generation, or caregiving sacrificing for our aging loved ones. Basically what we’re doing is just putting everyone else’s needs before our own.
But here’s the truth I discovered very painfully: “Someday” is not guaranteed.
At just 33 years old, I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. No warning until a Dr. said “Lymphoma” to me. One moment I was a healthy young woman (at least, I thought I was), and the next, my life was completely changed.
I don’t say that to scare you. I say it to wake you up, lovingly, to the reality that we don’t know what’s around the corner. Whether it’s a cancer diagnosis, a heart attack, or even something as sudden as a car accident, our health—and our freedom to move—can change drastically in a heartbeat.
That’s why I’m so passionate about encouraging women, especially those who have never traveled solo before, to start now. And I do mean as soon as you possibly can. I’m here to offer you significant help to get you traveling.
You Don’t Have to Wait Until the House is Empty
Many women tell me they’re waiting until their children are grown and out of the house before they travel, especially solo. And I get it. As caregivers, women usually do put ourselves last on the list.
But guess what? You can take care of yourself while still being there for your family. In fact, when you nurture your own interests and take time to explore new places—even just for a weekend or overnight close to home—you come back refreshed, fulfilled, and ready to give more to others since you’ve recharged.
You don’t have to hop on a plane to Bali (unless you want to!). A short solo getaway to a nearby town, a cozy overnight at a bed &breakfast, or even a quiet spa weekend counts. These small, intentional breaks can have a huge impact on your mental clarity, confidence, and creativity. Not to mention they’re super budget-friendly!
Why Solo Travel, and Why Now?
Solo travel isn’t just about where you go. It’s about what you learn along the way.
- You discover what you like to do when no one else is influencing the itinerary.
- You reconnect with your dreams, goals, and preferences.
- You gain confidence in yourself and your ability to navigate different places—on your terms. Knowing we’ll likely all be on our own at some point in life (women tend to outlive men if you look at life expectancy numbers), having the ability to solo travel safely is truly a life skill all women should get very comfortable with so we can live fully.
And doing it now, while you still have your health and mobility, is so crucial. Travel is much easier when you can walk long distances, go up all those stairs, and carry your own luggage. It’s also a way to experience life now—not just after the kids are grown or you hit a milestone birthday.
Let’s Make Travel Feel Doable—Not Distant
I know solo travel might sound intimidating, especially if you’ve never done it before. That’s where I come in.
As a professionally trained coach through Coach U and a longtime safe solo traveler, I help women just like you discover how empowering, safe, and deeply fulfilling solo travel can be.
When you work with me, we start with your story. We talk about your past travel and solo travel experiences—or lack thereof which is understandable (see above about putting everyone else before us)—and where exactly your hesitations lie. Maybe it’s budget. Maybe it’s safety. Maybe you’re just not sure what you’d even do on a solo trip.
Whatever the concern, I help you create a personalized plan so travel doesn’t feel overwhelming—it feels exciting and possible.
